Delete account

This page explains how to delete your LawFive account and the data linked to it: in the app, or by email to info@lawfive.ch, even without the app.

Who this page is for

This page is for everyone who has, or has had, an account in the LawFive app. An account is created when you register yourself or when you accept an invitation, and in both cases you set a password as you do so; after that you sign in with an email address and a password. How your account came about makes no difference to this page: it applies to every account. If you only signed up for the waiting list on lawfive.ch you do not have an account; the section "Deleting only individual data" applies to you.

Deleting your account in the app

Open the app and go to "Profile". Tap "Settings" there; the same path works in the browser, where on a wide screen you can also reach "Settings" from the menu behind your profile picture. Scroll to the "Danger Zone" section and tap "Delete Account". The question "Delete account?" appears: in the mobile app you confirm it with "Delete", in the browser with "OK" in the dialog box. That is all it takes: the deletion runs immediately and you are signed out. If it fails, the app shows an error message and you stay signed in; try again or write to info@lawfive.ch. If you have a paid subscription, cancel it first; see the section "A running subscription is not cancelled".

Requesting deletion without the app

You do not need the app to delete your account, and if you have already uninstalled it you do not have to install it again. Send an email to info@lawfive.ch with the subject "Account deletion" and state the email address you sign in to LawFive with. Send the message from that same address so that we can match it to your account; if that is no longer possible, write to us anyway and explain briefly why. As a rule we ask for neither a copy of an identity document nor your password. If there is doubt about your identity, we send a confirmation email to the address held on the account and delete only after your reply. We confirm receipt, delete the account as quickly as possible and at the latest within 30 days, and send you a confirmation by email afterwards. If the address matches no account, we come back to you. If you are under 16, or you are writing as a parent or guardian on behalf of your child, write to info@lawfive.ch as well; we settle everything else by email.

A running subscription is not cancelled

If you have taken out a paid subscription: deleting your account does not end it. The contract is held with Apple, Google or the web payment provider and keeps being charged there, even though your account with us no longer exists. So cancel the subscription first and delete the account afterwards. The easiest way is from inside the app while you are still signed in: "Profile", then "Settings", then "Subscription", then "Manage subscription". That button takes you to wherever your subscription actually sits: for a web subscription straight to its management page, where you can cancel; for a subscription bought in the App Store or Google Play, to that store. By hand you find it on iPhone and iPad in the system settings under your name at "Subscriptions", and on Android in the Google Play Store under "Payments and subscriptions". Once the account is deleted, "Manage subscription" is no longer available. If you cannot find your subscription, write to info@lawfive.ch and we will tell you where it is held. Apple, Google and our subscription provider also keep a customer record of their own, which only they can delete.

What happens when you delete

The deletion is immediate. There is no cooling-off period, no temporary deactivation and no restoring: in our active systems the data is gone at once and for good. In our hosting provider's technical backup copies it may still be present for a short time, until those copies are overwritten automatically; we do not restore deleted accounts from them. You are signed out straight away and can no longer sign in with those credentials. A deleted account cannot be brought back by any route. If you later set one up again — whether because the app offers registration by then, or with a new invitation from us — it is a new, empty account, even if you use the same email address. If you need an invitation for that, or you get stuck, write to info@lawfive.ch. Progress, XP, badges and streak start again from zero in any case. If you want a copy of your data first, write to info@lawfive.ch before deleting; we will provide it in a common format. When you delete inside the app, the app shows no success message and sends no confirmation email: being signed out is itself the confirmation. Depending on the device you then land on the public start page or on the sign-in screen; either way, signing in again with those credentials fails. If instead you stay signed in, or an error message appears, nothing was deleted.

What is deleted

When you delete your account we remove the following: the sign-in credentials including email address, password and all sessions; the profile with display name, language, association, date of birth, referee and assistant level, anonymity setting, role and sharing settings; every image file stored under your account in our image storage, meaning the profile picture and any earlier versions of it; all quiz data, meaning every answered question, every quiz session, XP, season XP, badges, streak and the statistics calculated from them; all assignment data, meaning the stored calendar address including its access token, all synchronised match assignments with date, location, teams and competition, and the team and club history derived from them; your bookmarks and notes on the Laws of the Game, as far as they are held on our servers; all friendships, friend requests and blocks in both directions; reports about profile pictures that you filed or that concern you; and the subscription entitlement in our database together with the technical helper data belonging to it, such as counters and markers from the subscription check. This also removes you from every leaderboard, because leaderboards are calculated directly from the profile. What does not go automatically is whatever is listed in the section "What remains, why, and for how long", plus the copies on your device — see "Data on your device".

What remains, why, and for how long

Not everything disappears. This is what remains: if you signed up for the waiting list on lawfive.ch, that entry remains with your email address, the association you gave, the language, where the sign-up came from, your consent and the time; it is not tied to the account and is deleted after that waitlist notification has been sent, at the latest within 12 months. The irreversible hash of the IP address from the spam defence is not part of that entry: it is held separately and is deleted after about an hour. For subscription events we keep technical logs of what Apple, Google or the payment provider reported; they hold the pseudonymous user id, the type of event, the time and, where a report could not be processed, a technical failure reason — no names, no email addresses and no payment data. Those logs prevent double processing and serve as evidence towards the stores; we keep them for as long as we need them for that, at most ten years from the event. If your account held administration rights, log entries about reports and role changes you handled remain, but without your id. Technical server logs at our hosting provider may still contain your user id for a short time, until they expire automatically.

Data on your device

Deletion covers our servers. For offline use the mobile app stores copies on your device: answered quiz questions, quiz sessions, a cached statistics snapshot and your bookmarks and notes on the Laws of the Game. These local copies are not removed automatically when the account is deleted. Uninstall the app if you want them gone as well, and do so in particular before you pass the device on or sell it. The copy of your bookmarks and notes on our servers, by contrast, is deleted together with the account; you do not need to write to us for that.

Deleting only individual data

You do not have to delete the whole account to get rid of individual data. Display name, association, date of birth, level and language can be changed in the app at any time. The "Remove Photo" button only hides your picture inside the app; the image file stays in our storage and remains retrievable over its internet address until we delete it on your request or together with your account. If you want only your waiting-list entry, only your profile picture or only one particular record deleted, write to info@lawfive.ch and say exactly what it is about; we do that without deleting the account. This page is only about deleting the account completely.
